A report by the auditor has shown that 90 per cent of firms are encountering difficulties when filling vacancies, with smaller organisations finding it particularly challenging.

Jon Clark, the director of the strategic employee reward team at Deloitte, advised smaller companies to promote to candidates the benefits they can offer outside of pay and bonus schemes.

"Firms outside of the Top 20 recognise that often they cannot compete with the larger firms on base pay and need to differentiate along other lines in order to compete for talent," he stated.

While more jobseekers in the legal sector are considering the career opportunities and work-life balance of vacancies, many are primarily drawn to a job by the salary promised, the survey found.

And Deloitte also noted that 40 per cent of law firms have adjusted their monetary reward schemes and pay packets in the last year.

According to ClickAJob chief executive Yngve Traberg, firms should also think wider than short term remuneration packages.

"It's not just money that makes employers competitive, it's the whole value proposition they can offer to prospective employees," he says.

"Does the place look nice? Is it easy to get to? Is it a stress-laden sweat-shop or easy, relaxed and professional? Start showing staff you genuinely care about these things and the ball game changes," he emphasises.
