Rachel
Job Title Strategy Analyst

After university I worked for a managing agent in the Lloyd’s market for two and a half years. From there I moved to a position within the Corporation of Lloyd’s to capitalise on my insurance knowledge.

Simplistically, the Corporation supplies the infrastructure for the market to operate, so not only do we provide the physical space; we also manage relationships with the market and provide a performance framework. The Corporation monitors the market and provides lots of support.

My team helps set the direction of where the market will be. For example, we write the Three-Year Plan to deliver the vision for Lloyd’s, which is to be the platform of choice for specialist insurance across the world.

It’s interesting because it’s all about current events. I read the press cuttings to see if there’s anything that might impact Lloyd’s strategic direction or delivery of the Plan: a kind of basic economics but on a big world scale, providing insight on how it might influence the market. I’m currently doing my ACII - the Advanced Diploma in Insurance. In terms of support, I get study days, and Lloyd’s pay for the exams, study materials and revision courses. I think you are offered great career developments here and, above all, I think it’s unique.

Before I joined, I thought Lloyd’s would be kind of stuffy, or about that ‘old boy’s network’. Obviously my preconceptions were totally wrong! For me this has been a great place to work, it’s given me good career prospects and I think I’ve fitted in well.

The people here make the place. It’s always quite exciting seeing the brokers queuing and underwriters discussing risk, and it makes you think what they are actually doing – basically underwriting the most complex risks in the world.

The culture is one of embracing change. And in the last couple of years, things have changed greatly at Lloyd’s. There’s a culture of collaboration and cross-departmental working.

There’s also a massive amount of diversity within Lloyd’s. For example, where I sit, I have colleagues from Zimbabwe, China, Iran, Hungary and Germany. I think it’s important because different people have different opinions and a different way of how they see things – so it adds greatly to the organisation.

To work here I think you need to be a good people person, adaptable, and willing to go out of your way. The fact that in my job no two days are ever the same is one of the best things about it.
