Job Title: Assistant Manager
Business area: Rental
Year joined: May 2006

What do you think it is that sets Enterprise apart from all the other companies out there?

Everything. When I look at the difference between my friends and me, I can’t help but think how lucky I am. I mean, we all left university and started our first proper jobs at around the same time but our experiences have been totally different. They’re all stuck in jobs they hate, and the culture of the companies they work for mean that they’re never going to get the opportunity to prove themselves. Whereas, I know my talent isn’t going to go to waste. The Enterprise policy is to promote from within, so, as long as I put in the hard work, I’ll reap the rewards.

I can’t think of anything worse than working for a company that doesn’t recognise or reward the contribution their employees make. That’s why I love being part of the Enterprise team. I hadn’t even been with the company a year when I was made Assistant Manager. And I’ve already experienced so many once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. Everyone likes to meet their sale targets. But imagine if day trips to Paris and 14-night holidays in Dubai were the incentive. Now that’s what I call job satisfaction.

It’s not all jetsetting and sunbathing though. We may play hard but we work hard too. Our branch figures are really important to us and the whole team puts in 110% to make sure we keep our customers happy. If there’s one think I’ve learnt from our Management Trainee Programme, it’s that a satisfied customer will always come back for more.

Actually, the Management Trainee Programme has taught me so much about running my own area of the business that I can’t wait to become a Branch Manager. Not just because the company takes all of the Branch Managers to Orlando every year, but because I’ve started to mentor new trainees and I really enjoy it. I want to get more of an opportunity to pass on my knowledge.

’When business is good we all get rewarded.’

Within a matter of months Sean was promoted to Assistant Manager. And he’s already thinking about his next career move.

I first heard of Enterprise when I was browsing online for a career. They said I’d be trained to run a rental business from day one, and this was a real attraction. I could also tell I’d have a big part to play in the day-to-day running of the business. And this was a far more exciting prospect than just pushing paper and being left out of the loop.

Early involvement
My career with Enterprise kicked off in a new branch in Letterkenny (which is my home town, as it happens). There were just two of us working in the branch, so we had to do lots of marketing, which was a great learning curve and also good fun. As a start-out branch, we were busy with loads of sales calls, but I did have time to pick my manager’s brain. I think that may have had a big part to play in the way I was so quickly promoted.

At Enterprise, the key thing is customer service. If we look after the customer, the customer will come back, which is obviously good for business. And when business is good, we all get rewarded. The level of customer service expected of you becomes second nature after a few days.

Personal development
What I noticed about the company compared to my previous jobs was the massive emphasis on employee development. From day one I was given extensive training on all aspects of management - sales, marketing, staff management, you name it. And because of the quality of the mentoring I received, I was able to achieve a rapid promotion to Assistant Manager. In fact, everything has moved so fast since I joined that I spend a lot of time thinking about my long-term future. I do know that I want to go as far as I possibly can with Enterprise. And the speed of promotion available to you is definitely one of the best things about working here. Everyone in the company is great fun too. We get together regularly for company excursions. It gives you a good chance to socialise with people from other offices and put names to faces. It’s no wonder I always come to work smiling.
