Bournemouth University
The Business School
(incorporating the Department of Law)

Who comes to the Department of Law?
The Business School’s Department of Law
attracts students with an ever increasing
diversity of career ambitions, ranging from
aspiring solicitors, to patent and trade mark
attorneys. This range is due to the countless
opportunities our law courses offer, from
formal legal training, to specialist
postgraduate courses in Intellectual Property and International Commercial Law.
Each year, we welcome students from a range
of backgrounds. If their chosen career path is
to become a solicitor, they often join us
having completed their Qualifying Law
Degree, either at BU or elsewhere. If they
have a degree in any other discipline our one
year CPE/Graduate Diploma in Law course provides the perfect opportunity to convert
their undergraduate degree in order to
progress onto our Legal Practice Course
(LPC).
Our LPC provides the formal training
necessary to become a solicitor and is held in
high esteem, achieving the highest possible
grading by the Law Society in five out of six
assessment categories during a recent
monitoring visit.
As well as this formal legal training, students
choose BU to gain specialist knowledge of a
niche area of law through our industry
focused LLM and Postgraduate Certificate
courses, including Intellectual Property and
International Commercial Law. A Professional
Skills Course is also available, designed
specifically for trainee solicitors.
Why BU?
We offer an ideal blend of the theoretical and practical. Delivered using the latest
technologies, combined with findings from
our law research centres and the knowledge
of academics that practice in the legal
profession, our students are assured a unique
learning experience.
Doesn't everyone say that?
Of course, but here’s the evidence. We
maximise e-learning opportunities for our
students, including downloadable lectures for
MP3 devices and our libraries ensure on and
off campus access to extensive online
e-resources. Our students act as exemplary
ambassadors for the Department, engaging in
national and international mooting
competitions and are heavily involved in The
Innocence Project, a national litigation
organisation, dedicated to exonerating
wrongfully convicted people. Our academics
undertake highly regarded external roles,
including debate on House of Commons
Committees, informing government
education reform, Chairing of the Committee
of Heads of University Law Schools (CHULS),
and extensive research, including war crimes
in Cambodia and the intellectual property issues
surrounding television formats.
What's for the future?
We are extending our provision of courses at
both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
into areas of entertainment, sports, business
law and regulation. From September 2009,
our postgraduate students will be located in
our brand new Executive Business School. |
