9.00 am
I usually arrive at my desk by 9 am as it's always good to have a chance to check my voicemails and emails before getting stuck into a day's work. Usually I have received a few messages from the previous day, and so it's helpful to deal with anything urgent as soon as possible. I generally make up a list of "things to do" on a daily basis – so this is the point where it may need a bit of revision…
9.30 am
There is often a lot of research work for trainees in their Contentious seat. I tend to get on with research in the morning, when my brain is still functioning properly! Occasionally it might also be necessary to run off to court, if something requires urgent delivery and the court clerk is not around or already down there.
11 am
I receive a phone call from solicitors acting on the other side in current proceedings. They are requesting an extension to the deadline for producing witness statements. Usually this might not be a trainee's decision, but we've been expecting this call, so I agree to an extension.
1 pm
Lunchtimes vary enormously. Often there might be a training session over lunch on a key issue such as disclosure or pre-action protocols. Sandwiches are always provided for these. However, as it's Wednesday, I have to dash next door for the weekly rehearsal of the firm choir!
2 pm
Back at my desk. As I've finished off the research, I continue working through some documents on an online database as part of an e-disclosure exercise for one of our clients. I am liaising with a barrister in this exercise, so there are a few emails and calls to discuss how to proceed.
3.30 pm
CSR meeting. We are currently planning a few weeks of CSR activities for the firm and, as I am a member of the London CSR team, I pop downstairs for the meeting. A number of interesting initiatives are discussed, as well as new ways of raising money for our local Charities of the Year.
4.45 pm
Back at my desk and responding to various emails that have accumulated in my inbox, answering queries from clients and Counsel.
5.30 pm
Monthly team meeting. These are now conducted by video conference to all three offices, in London, Leeds and Manchester. This allows everyone to keep in touch and share know-how. There is often a guest speaker too.
7 pm
Having finished any urgent work and decided what is best left for the morning, I make up a new "to do" list and then head for home.
